The 1927 season proved to be a banner year for Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees, quite literally as they captured the American League pennant by an astonishing 19 games over the powerful Philadelphia Athletics. “Murderer’s Row” is widely considered the greatest baseball team in history and at the center of that lineup was Babe Ruth, who clobbered 60 home runs that season. The Bronx Bombers pounded out 158 homers that year, 102 more than the next closest team. But, Ruth does not often receive the accolades he deserved, as his freewheeling lifestyle tends to obscure his off-season workout regimen. And while the Bambino was bigger than life with an appetite of equal proportion, his commitment to baseball rarely wavered.

Offered here is an example of the training regimen that Ruth endured each off-season with his personal trainer, Artie McGovern. This impressive 33.5” x 24” framed and matted photo display features five 7” x 9” signed photos of Ruth and McGovern off-season training with “Babe Ruth – training in Hollywood, Calif. – 1927” inscribed at the center of the piece. Why Hollywood, California? Well, this appears to be a training session, gearing up for the 1927 season while Ruth was working on the film “Babe Goes Home”, released in May 1927. Each image is signed “Babe Ruth” in black fountain pen with four of the photos grades clearly 9-10 strength and one photo 7-8. Photos include Ruth bending and stretching, boxing and what appears to be grappling.

Previously included in the famed Halper collection, the overall condition is EX with minor water damage in the lower right corner of the matting and photo, but the blemish has no direct affect to any signature. One might ask why this quintuplet of perfection in Babe Ruth autographs has not been broken up? Barry Halper was the ultimate visionary of a collector and he could surely appreciate the marriage of this sequence for nearly 100 years now. He even dared not to replace the original matte and frame. LOAs included from James Spence Authentication and five full LOA's from PSA/DNA for each of the individual signatures.
